A Krookodile-Man? At Slateport U?!

That's what the rumours were saying, anyway. Social media, and Slateport in general, really, was abuzz with reports of a scientist who'd accidentally turned himself into a Krookodile of all things. Exactly what kind of research this man was involved in or how it had occurred was still a mystery, but whatever had crawled out of the laboratory had left behind quite a mess.

beckett carlson had been hired to investigate, thanks to his low pay rate and moderately high rate of being able to close a case quickly. They'd also called in a budding scientist from another lab to help him, someone who had supposedly known the missing perp on some level.

The blonde waited for her to arrive, wearing a black leather jacket and stylishly torn-up jeans as he rummaged around the mess on the floor with a ruler. Everything was covered in sand... was it really a Krookodile-Man they were looking for?

"Crazy shit..." He mutters.

A Krookodile-Man! At Slateport U! Isn’t that exciting?!

Sure, her every instinct told her that it was much more likely that this was something completely ordinary that people had blown out of proportion (as they usually do), but the idea of a man being capable of turning himself into a pokémon?! That was just too cool for her not to check it out!

All it took was persistence, finding out the name of this supposed “Krookodile-Man”, and mentioning to the dean how she had worked with him in the past and would love to help with the investigation because she’s just soooo worried about him (she totally had worked with him, even if only a couple of times), and tada! She got herself access to the wreck of a lab that made for today’s crime scene!

It’s quietly that she approaches the detective while he investigates the room, only speaking up once all too close:

Tilting her head just so slightly, she looks at him with gleeful azure eyes and a bright smile. Her every word dripping of that Galarian accent that is so very noticeable.

A Galarian? By the natural accent, it seemed the scientist he’d been waiting for was a transfer student. Great ‘main character’ energy; he loved it!

”Ah! So you’re the labcoat who knew this guy, right?” Giving his thigh an energetic slap, the blonde shoots straight up from his crouch and turns to set eyes upon her. He’s stunned into brief silence when he’s met with stunning azure hues and long flowing hair about the same shade. First they want him to investigate a Krookodile-Man, and now they send him the cutest college girl he’d seen all week? Wild.

“Hi.” He grins back with a hint of swagger, setting the rule in his hand down upon a lab table beside them before leaning upon it with the back of his palm.

”What’s your name?”

Talk about sand could wait later, right? Maybe he could impress her with his examination of it so far. Maybe they could go to the beach tomorrow and enjoy some sand together, he thinks.

When one studies something like Toxicology, being observant can often be key, for it’s important to be capable of noticing even the slightest of changes in a subject.

As if having consumed a poison that quickly takes effect, beckett carlson’s demeanour changes the moment he looks at her. Had he expected someone different? Probably, but even if Ceri realises as much, watching his reaction is all too amusing to the young woman. He grins in the confident way of someone who wants to show off, even going as far as leaning against the table, and in response, she can’t help but giggle – the sound ever too sweet and full of joy.

”Hi! I’m Ceri, nice to meet you.” She beams, matching his energy, and a hand is even offered because that somehow feels right in a situation like this. Isn’t a detective supposed to be someone important, after all?

”I hope I can help you.”

As she talks, she never looks away from him, making sure to make emphasis on those last few words as she holds his gaze.

Her name was Ceri! And that giggle! Shucks.

The blonde made it a habit not to fall head over heels for girls so quickly, but Ceri was certainly coming out of those gates swinging. Regardless, he manages to compose himself before pushing off the table he's been leaning on and accepting her hand shake firmly. "Atlas Beckett. You can call me At, though, if you want."

Though he notes the emphasis on those last few words from her, he's at a loss for exactly what that emphasis is supposed mean. Eventually, he reasons that perhaps she simply wanted to get on with it. "Right, well... I'm sure we'll make a good team." He assuredly smiles, suddenly realizing he hasn't let go of her hand just yet.

He immediately does so.

"Anyway... what can you tell me about the guy who ran this lab? Was he always interested in turning himself into a Pokémon? And where do you think he went?"

The compliment is spoken with a smile, and although some could probably take words like those as mocking, they really aren’t. It is cute. In fact, he’s too damn cute – as Ceri quickly comes to realise when that much stronger hand holds hers. What is it with blond men always taking her breath away?

She looks up at him, into his eyes, and when he finally lets go of her hand, there’s a soft laugh.

”I bet we will.”

Sadly, it seems as if it’s time to get to work, although why is it sad if the whole reason she had come here to begin with was to learn more about this Krookodile-man mystery? She had allowed herself to get distracted by him, and yet, despite realising as much, she still stays close while he asks his questions.

”Uhmmm…” A single finger is raised to meet glossy lips as she thinks. ”He was kind of quiet so we never talked much, but his work centered around pokémon genetics, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he had that kind of crazy dream… As for where he went… Hmm… Wouldn’t the sort of place a Krookodile would like make sense? Oh! Or maybe somewhere to fix his condition, since this lab is a mess.”

Atlas stutters at her response for his nickname. 'Y-You're cute!' He almost retorts, though thankfully manages to catch himself just in time. Instead, he merely nods and sighs in a flutter of abashed chuckles.

And the flustering doesn't stop there.

The way she assures him they'll make a good pair strikes a chord with him. He needs to stop and process it for a moment, his mind analyzing every word and the pitch with which they were spoken. Yet still, as always, having trouble differentiating between signals, signals disguised as casual chit-chat, and just casual chit-chat.

In the end, this makes the idea of them getting to work a somewhat welcome distraction. Though he still yearns to hear another maybe-signal from her soon.

Taking out his notebook and pen as she shares her information with him, At is sure to mark down all the best bullet-points... except for, maybe, the last few. He catches himself admiring her beauty again as she looks up in a thought, a single finger placed at her full, glossy lips.

Then she turns, he snaps out of it (again), and snaps his notebook shut. "R-Right! Uhh... where do you think that would be?" He asks, stuffing his notebook back into his pack as his eyes shift away in thought. "The sandpit at the park? No, that's probably too small..." He mutters, beginning to slowly pace across the floor.

"I suppose the beach, maybe... but I don't think Krookodile like the water. Assuming he's looking for a cure, however... the closest thing to a lab outside of the university is, well... at the high school." And they had a sand pit on their field, too, right? For jumping gymnastics?

Ceri almost wants to make fun of him, to bring a hand to her hip and pointedly ask him something like “Well, aren’t you supposed to be the detective?” while winking, but she stops herself, mostly because this time he’s the one who distracts her.

It’s with fascination that she watches him as he reaches his own conclusions, almost as if she could see the cogs turning in his head.

It makes sense, but there’s still the slightest of pouts for a second or two. ”Hmmm… Makes sense, yeah… Oh. Does that mean we’re breaking into the school to find Mr. Krookodile-man?” A pout that’s quickly replaced by a rather mischievous grin, that is.

"Yes!" Atlas brightly responds, perhaps a little too excited and carefree about breaking into a place of learning. But it was after hours and in the name of solving a mystery, so... no harm, no foul, right?

"And you gotta come with me, Ceri!" He adds.

Suddenly, he steps forward with a pep in his step, gently grasping her hand in his own as he tugs them out of the lab. "You got a bigger brain for this science-y stuff than I do. And you probably know the area better, right?"

Of course, eventually, the instinctive gesture of grasping her hand dawns on him, and he ends up growing a little red-faced for it as they exit the university.
